Can Seniors Get Car Insurance Discounts to Lower Rates

As you get older, the risks of driving change. You may be at a higher risk of being in an accident. In other cases, you just don’t spend as much time on the road. If you are older, there are sometimes opportunities available to you to help you save money. Auto insurance discounts depend on various factors,Senior man driving a car though. Here are a few examples of how you can save money.

#1: You’re Driving Much Less

You spend 30 years driving to and from work. Perhaps it was 100 miles or more a day, 5 days a week. In this situation, you may now be driving much less in retirement. The current policy you have may not reflect the reduced mileage. Let your agent know that. Also, if you do not drive much at all – under 12,000 miles a year – you may qualify for a low mileage discount. This is an excellent savings option for those who qualify.

#2: Take Steps to Protect Your Car

Whether you have a car that you’ve loved using for years or a classic vehicle sitting in the garage, it’s important to have protection for it. Keep it stored in the garage. Install a security system on it. This can help to reduce your car insurance costs. Your insurer knows there is less risk of theft.

#3: Know When to Stop Driving

This is a hard decision to make. Yet, if you are no longer confident behind the wheel or your eyesight is not what it should be, you should not be on the roadways. Be sure to make the decision to stop driving after thoughtful, careful consideration. That can help you to avoid having to maintain extensive coverage on your vehicle. You may be able to drop the amount of coverage you have to make it much more affordable.

Schedule a Consultation with Your Insurer

No matter where you are in life right now, it helps to know there’s an agent who can help you save money. As you approach 65 or make significant changes in the way you drive, meet with your auto insurance agent. Talk about those changes.

Consider the policy changes that may be best for you at this point. Most drivers will see rates rise if they are in a car accident as they are older. However, you can reduce this risk by simply making good decisions about your driving habits and coverage needs.
